Lately, I have been thinking about the American Girl dolls I have. I am so happy to have all 6 of my dolls, and I am very content with the dolls I have! I feel like I have enough dolls right now, but I do have enough money for a new doll. It is so hard to pick an American Girl doll, though! There are so many to pick from!! When I pick a new doll I usually pick her because of how cute she is, or if I like her character. :)
So, I was wondering how do you pick an American Girl Doll you want? Is it the way she looks, her story, or just to collect? I would love to hear the American Girl dolls that you want too! If you don't have any American Girl dolls yet, I would love to hear which ones you are thinking of getting! I always love to hear what you have to say! :)

I pick dolls by their story, how cute she is, and what I already have (for example, I already have 2 blondes, and I don't want another blonde). I think you should choose a doll that is a best friend, you could get Emily or Felicity because you already have Elizabeth and Molly. Choose the doll that you think has the best story and who shines the brightest.
Hope this helps!

Felicity is a good doll to choose because she is Elizabeth's best friend.
I also choose dolls by how cute they are, I really want Molly because she is adorable.

I pick dolls by how cute they are. I mean, you wouldn't want an ugly doll, would you? I also pick them by the meet outfit they come in. I LOVE all my dolls' meet outfits.

I pick dolls by their cuteness. I don't want to get any more right now, though. I am mostly interested in expanding my clothing collection. ^.^
Posted by: Gabrielle | January 17, 2010 at 07:26 PM
I pick them by if they are cute, I like their clothes, and if I like what they represent (story, all that)! :D
Posted by: Quinlyn | January 17, 2010 at 07:28 PM
I pick dolls based on how cute they are or how bright their stories shine. I also pick dolls based on how long they are available. I think you should get Lanie or Emily. Lanie is only here for one year so she would be a good choice. Emily and Molly are being archived is year so Emily would be a good choice too. Maybe felicity too. you already have Elizabeth so that would be a good choice. Hope I helped:)!

I also have six dolls, and I think that's a good number. I'm trying to resist getting too many. Not an easy thing to do! xP
I don't have strict criteria when it comes to picking dolls. Usually I wait until a new doll comes out and see if I'm drawn to her. I don't remember Nellie or Rose, but for Luna I was obsessed with Harry Potter at the time and I wanted a Luna Lovegood character, so I got #27, who is gorgeous and looks just like I pictured. For Mia, I was just really drawn to her and I loved her from the start. She was so cute and I loved her collection too! I initially wanted Chrissa but changed to Sonali because she was unique and very pretty. Finally, I was really fascinated by Rebecca's time and she really reminds me a lot of myself, both looks and otherwise. :D

i don't pick them by their collections because you can get there collections even without having the doll. i pick them by the stories, and i don't like just like you dolls. i like the ones with a cool time period because i am so interested in history.

Hey Liz!
I have 9 dolls, Samantha,Chrissa,Kit,Emily,Mia,Nicki,Elizabeth, and 2 JLY dolls named Paige and Caitlynn. I pick them by how much they mean to me. I also pick them out by their hair color and their story.

Oh,
I am also planning to go to the American Girl Place in Chicago and i am saving for Lanie or a JLY doll with red hair and any ideas for names for her?
Posted by: Meghan | January 17, 2010 at 10:16 PM
I'd get one that has ethnicity, like African-American who you could always make Indian or Asian. I'd get a Just Like You, Bitty Twin or Bitty Baby because you can make up their stories and how they shine. You also get to pick their names. I also like that you get to make their personalities.
I'm not a big fan of historicals - I don't really like dolls with assigned names, nor do I like changing their names because it's so hard to find one that suits them. I don't really like that they have assigned stories, too, but I do like their histories behind them.
I love my dolls. I have 3 - one JLY (Cassandra), one Bitty Twin (Stephenie) and one Historical (Julie)

Liz, DEFNATLEY get a new doll, it's about time you get a new one! :) I LOVE American Girl Dolls and also have trouble picking JUST ONE out. But here are my loopholes.
1. It will make you connect to the doll more by reading her books. You will learn about her story and personality towards friends, and stuff. You may fall in love with a doll by reading what her life was like.
2. For me, sometimes what draws me close to dolls is their pretty fun-to-style hair or other special features. Some dolls with GREAT hair are JLY #30, Julie, Kaya (as long as you take care of it but REALLY long and SUPER fun!), and Felicity. I have experienced with all these dolls so I know what I'm talking about!
3. Cuteness is a big thing. Get one whose face is adorable! I personally think the Josefina mold is one of the cutest on dolls. Another thing about Kaya, her face looks very weird in the magazine but I PROMISE she is great in real life. Her face I think might be the same as Bruntte Girl Bitty Twin. Before you get a doll or If you think one looks weird, ask your friends who have or have experienced with the doll before you buy. Listen to reviews on American Girl.com
And have you ever thought of welcoming anew kind of doll to your family! I HIGHLY recommend A Life Of Faith dolls from Mission City Press. These dolls are all vinyl, but SO good quality and have the best hair.I have Kathleen and she has one of the most CUTEST faces on the whole entire world, I'm not kidding.I also have Elsie and she is also ADORABLE and has beautiful long "real" eyelashes and STUNNING eyes. Her stories are the best. They were written by Martha Finely back in 1850, and now have been checked and revised to fit the modern launguage of children today. The dolls are strong Christians, and the books will make you feel closer to God. My mom and I love them. The collection can no longer be bought from the company's personal store, but they are availible at local Christian book stores like Family Christian. They can be purchased online through Amazon, too. The dolls' price (like in the store and stuff) is exactly $100. The accessories and clothing is beautiful.
5 STARS FROM ME FOR "A LIFE OF FAITH"

Hey Liz,
I know hwat you mean it is hard to pick a doll. I think you should get a new doll.
I choose dolls by rulling them out. I take an american girl catalog and look at the page with all of them on it (use a catalog you don't care about.) You look at them all togetther and you use scissors to cut out the ones you know you don't want or you already have. (and you also need to cut out pictures of the friends dolls.)Then you look at the ones that are left and you think about there stories and keep rulling them out till you have one. Once you get that one if you decide you want it you can either order it from american girl or go on ebay and look for it. This is how I choose an american girl doll. Hop this helps you out keep up the good work!

There are no dolls i dont want so i just do enney meeny miney mo
Posted by: Beth | January 18, 2010 at 10:25 AM
I usually choose by how cute she is. I also have like 5 dolls then I narrow it down to the 1 I really want. I want Lanie, Molly and a few JLY's so I would have a picture of all of them and decide what one is the cutest. If I have 2 then I wait a day or 2 and then do it again. As soon as I decide I buy her.

I really suggest Ivy. She is really a good doll. Her hair is extremely silky and she comes with very cute earrings. A most have for doll collectors!
Posted by: uncrocksm | January 18, 2010 at 11:27 AM
I think one that shines in your life.
I would have a cute doll. I used to think Chrissa, you may get her thourgh Amazon, but she isn't that great. (I haven't bought her, I just listened to a review on Dolldiaries.com.) I think Lanie would be nice, or like some say, a limted one. I mostly think you should choose. I think you should get a different kind of doll, like Life of Faith or Madame Alexander. What ever is right for you, Liz!
Posted by: Emily L. | January 18, 2010 at 01:06 PM
I usually pick my dolls based on which one is similar to me! I will take the american girl doll quiz onine, read the dolls I'm considerings books and finally just think which one looks like me? I used this process with to get both Nellie and Mia and have been very pleased with my dolls. I think if you do this you feel kinda like your doll is your pretend twin or Best friend which is kinda neat too! Also if you don't want a doll necesarilly their are tons of fun acessories and outfits you can get for your current dolls! I personally like the the matching Lanie tees. I think they are darling and matching your doll is soo fun!

Hi liz! your website is amazing! But i have one concern. How come kit gets to be up on your border, and you never let any of the other dolls be up there? are you playing favorites, or do you just like how kit looks up there? it might be fun to change it sometimes!!!
Posted by: Cortney | January 18, 2010 at 01:39 PM
i think you should get a doll of the year because they are only here for one year.☺☺♥♥♥♥♠♠
Posted by: samantha | January 18, 2010 at 01:41 PM
Oh, and Meghan, I want the JLY with curly red hair, blue eys and light skin. I'm naming her Abagail becuse in the song Fifteen by Taylor Swift there's an Abagail with curly red hair, so yeah.
Posted by: Shelby | January 18, 2010 at 02:02 PM
Well, I want Kit because I want to get her type-writer and I also like her short hair. You could pick a doll because you like the things that go with her or because of the hair she has. Like, if you can work better with doll hair that's short, you can get Kit. Or if you can work better with curly hair, you could get Ruthie.
Hope this helps,
A

Hello, it's May. I've recently been concidering getting a 4th doll, but I'm not sure if I will in the end. I was thinking Kit or Molly. Which do you like better? But again, I'm not sure. Apart from that, I was considering getting a JLY, cos I'd be able to give it a personality of my own :)
Posted by: Maeve | January 18, 2010 at 03:22 PM
Hi Liz:)
I have to agree it is really hard to pick out a new doll. Usually I have a list. The dolls I want the most are at the top and etc. Usually that list changes frequently though!!(-:
If I were you since you don't have a JLY (NEW!!) I would probably get one you like or I would wait to see if a new historical doll comes out in the summer to replace Kirsten like last year (2009)!!
I hope this helps(;

Hi Liz!
If you would buy a new doll, I suggest you buy her because you like her personality, lifestyle, how cute she is, and also if I were you, I wuld pick out a doll I know I would do a lot with, like a doll with hair that's cute for styling or a doll that has a unique look. Pick a doll you love. I have five dolls including my Our Generation doll Hailey and if I could have another doll right now I would pick probably Emily. But you might want to pick, like a few others said, Felicity or Emily. Or some best friend dolls other than the ones I mentioned. But a JLY doll with caramel hair sounds the best-and that's just my opinion. Good luck on your new doll if you're going to get one! :) ;)
Posted by: hannah A. | January 18, 2010 at 03:53 PM
i choose the dolls on how they look and how easy or hard it would be to take care of them. i think you should get the jly doll with straight orange hair and bangs. or you should get the jly with short orange hair.
Posted by: ************************************************************************* | January 18, 2010 at 06:24 PM
I pick them by how cute they are. Also, I try to have variety with their hair styles and colors. One reason I got Lanie was because of her beautiful blonde curls! I also try to have a varitey of the different types, Historical, Just Like You, GOTY, and Bitty Baby. One main reason I got Chrissa was because I loved her storyline. I had been bullied. So I liked the message Chrissa's books showed. But you might want to also get a different type of doll! Like ALOF! They have beautiful eyes!! I love them too! Have fun choosing!
Posted by: Anne♥ | January 18, 2010 at 08:20 PM
I forgot to add, the dolls I want are Emily, Rebecca, JLY's, and Violet.
Posted by: Anne♥ | January 18, 2010 at 08:21 PM
Wow. Liz! I might get a new doll for my bday.
I hope you get your doll, and I am, beleive me, so HAPPY for you!
Well, maybe you could get a JLY that looks like you! Or, maybe you could get Felicity for Elizabeth, Emily for Molly, Ruthie for Kit, or Ivy so Hope's Julie gets a friend, but the doll would be yours.
I get a doll depending on how cute she is, her hair, if it's styleable, and if I just really like her-also, consider her books.
Liz, I want to get Kit after I get my other doll for my bday, if I get bday money or work around the house. Should I get her off eBay-her hair shouldn't be too, well, ratty because it's short. What do you think?
I want:
Felicity
Kaya (to be Singing Bird)
Molly
Kit
Lanie
Sonali (She's still in stock-I might get her for my bday!)
Josefina
Julie
JLY with caramel hair, light skin, and blue eyes (she looks like me)
JLY with layered blonde hair, blue eyes, and light skin
Aaaaand...maybe Ruthie. IDK.
Hope this helps!

I would choose by the dolls personality. I would choose the best personality. I think thats the most important thing. If I were you I would probably choose Rebecca. But that depends if you want a historical doll. If you want a Just Like You doll then you can name her and give her a personality of her own.
I hope this helps,
-Jaelyn

Liz, you could also do this-ask youreslf these questions:
Does her skintone match her vinyl?
Will her hair get (all respect here) ratty in a matter of months? (NOT trying to say you don't take care of your dolls.)
If the doll has curly hair, (Ruthie, Lanie, Rebecca, etc.) will you be able to manage it?
Does this doll come in a haistyle I might not want to undo? (Josefina's braid, Rebecca's curls, Felicity's ponytail, Julie's side braid)
Do you like her name? (Not a big deal unless you dislike changing names)
Well, hope this helps!

I picked my JLY dolls because it look *Just like me*! I also was very close to buying Kirsten because my Great Grandma came from Sweden. And I'd also pick it because of how much you lie the books. My fave books are Addy's Kirsten's and Josefina's.

Thanks everyone for the great advice!! You all are very helpful! :)
Charlotte, I put that doll (JLY #39) on my wishlist for Christmas, but I didn't ask for it. My parents knew I wanted the camera I asked for, but if I would have not asked for my camera I could've gotten a doll. I LOVE my new camera though! :)
Have a great day, and Thanks again everyone!

Just because you have enough money for a doll doesn't mean you should buy one. Don't get one just because you can.
I fell in love with Nicki when I saw her. Ditto w/Becky.

c) A JLY
d) Lanie
They still have Gwen and Sonali on americangirl.com, too!

Hello,Its Mikaela. How i would pick a new doll could be kinda hard to choose but,I have some great ideas. You could get slips of paper and put names of dolls that you want, then you draw a name, whoever name you pick out you get that doll!! You could ask Family and Friends what American girl doll the recommend and if you like that doll you should get it!! Some dolls that i recommend are,Lanie,Rebbecca, and JLY doll #28!!! I hope my tips help!!!P.S. I hope you had a lot of fun at the reds game in Cincinnati!!!

I really think that I pick them by their cuteness and the outfit they come in. They are all hard to resist, but I kinda wish that I would've gotten Julie instead of Chrissa. Oh well! But exciting news, I may be getting to go to the AG Place in Dallas for my 2nd time next summer!

I pick dolls by their looks. If they look lonely then I think of it as going to an orphanage and adopting a kid with no parents. Then I bring then home and have a party with my other dolls.
