Since the new American Girl of the Year doll Grace has a love for baking, our craft today is inspired by her! French Macarons are a popular treat that originated in France, but has become widely known in America too. I've never personally had one, but they look delicious! Macarons are filled with ganache, buttercream icing, or jam and sandwiched between two cookies. Plus, they are colorful and super cute!
Want to know how to make one for your doll too? Let's get started!
First you'll need some supplies:
- Felt of any color (Usually the color of the macaron hints at what flavor it is. Like pink for grapefruit, brown for chocolate, green for mint, purple for grape, and orange for peach! Some are very unique, like rose, earl grey tea, creme brulee, and lavender. There are lots and lots of flavors!)
- Polyfill or cotton balls
- Sewing Needle & Thread
- Glue
- Scissors
- Ruler (optional)
Once you have all you need, cut out five circles from your felt. Two circles will need to be one inch wide and the other two circles will need to be a half inch wide. Cut out a final white circle, also one inch wide.
Then with your needle and thread, sew simple stitches around the perimeter of the circle, close to the edge.
When you've stiched around the entire circle, pull your thread tighter so that the felt starts to scrunch up.
Make sure not to pull too tight. Now, get out your polyfill or cotton!
Place a tiny bit inside the scrunch felt, then put one of your smaller felt circles over top of the polyfill. With your needle and thread still in place, sew around the circle again with up-and-down stitches.
Do those steps twice, so that you'll have two macaron cookies. All you need to do next is glue the other white circle (the filling) between them.
And, you're finished! As Grace would say, bon travail! {Good Job!}
Make a rainbow of macarons! Which color is your favorite?
Hmm, which one to eat first!!
