Happy Chinese New Year! What better way to celebrate than eating delicious Chinese food? Ivy has been busy making Chow Mein and we also have a cute Chinese Take Out Box you can make. Let's get cooking!
First you'll need some supplies:
- Tan Felt
- Orange Felt
- Green Felt
- Tape
- Metal Craft Wire (Like the kind you use for jewelry)
- Scissors
- Wooden Skewer
- Doll Takeout Box Pattern
Before we get into the craft here's the FREE Take-Out Box Pattern. You can print it out by clicking on the picture or link below. (Be sure to download and print at “Actual Size” from a PDF reader like Adobe Reader. If you save & print directly from your browser, it might not print at the right size.)
(I suggest printing it out on heavy cardstock since it will hold up better to doll play, than with regular paper)
Now, here's how to make the chow mein:
1. Cut strips of tan felt about four inches long. 2. Keep cutting them until you have a lot! 3. Take a strip and pull gently to give it shape. Make sure to not pull too hard or it might break. 4 & 5. Use your fingers or squeeze the strips between your palm to give them more of a squiggly noodle look. 6. Cut tiny pieces of orange and green felt to be the vegetables in the chow mein.
Since that's done, let's make the take-out box!
1. Print out the take out box pattern. 2. Cut around the outside lines of the pattern like shown. 3. You'll notice a little line on one of the flaps. 4. Fold it over and use scissors to cut a slit. 5. Begin folding along the lines that make a square in the middle. Fold the four outside flaps. 6. Fold the triangular flaps outward. 7. Secure with tape and do it on both sides. 8. Bring the rest of the flaps up to form a 3-D square. 9. Put tape on the four corner creases. 10. Bring the four flaps at the top together and try out the clasp to close the box.
Open the box up again because you need to put in your box handle. Use a five inch long piece of craft wire. Poke a hole above where the two triangle flaps meet. (If your wire isn't sharp enough to poke through the paper, try using a pushpin or sharpened pencil.) Once it's through the paper, fold the wire inside the box to hold it in place. Then bring the wire over to the other side and do the same thing. Ta-da you have a handle! :)
Finish by filling up the takeout box with the chow-mein! You can make chopsticks with a wooden skewer. Just cut it down with scissors or break them in two. (You may want to ask a parent to help you)
It looks so yummy!
Ivy can't wait for her friends to arrive so she can share the rest of the chow mein. :)
I hope you all have an awesome Chinese New Year! Here are some other crafts you can make:
