Kit and I have been inspired by other famous women photographers lately! One in particular is Margaret Bourke-White, a photojournalist and photographer from New York. Her photographs shown here are from Kit's time period, the 1930s. I also think it's cool since Kit's full name is Margaret, just like her!
At just 25, Margaret impressed Henry Luce of Fortune magazine with her photographs of American industry and became the publication’s first staff photographer. When Luce created LIFE magazine in 1936, Margaret was the first female photographer on staff, and her work graced the cover of the magazine’s first issue. Her photojournalism assignments took her around the U.S. and abroad. She grew to document pressing social issues, such as the devastation of the Great Depression. She was also the first woman accredited by the U.S. military as an official war correspondent and allowed in combat zones during World War 2.
Margaret Bourke-White once said, "The camera is a remarkable instrument. Saturate yourself with your subject, and the camera will all but take you by the hand and point the way." She inspires us to take risks and be bold in our creativity!
Here are some of Margaret's famous photographs, and a picture of herself near the bottom right and at the top right. Isn't Kit's 1930s Kodak camera awesome? It's one of my favorite items from American Girl!!
I love learning about famous women during the time periods of the American Girl doll historical characters. I hope you enjoyed the pictures and were inspired too! :)
